Cowboy Golfers Six Strokes Out Of First In Wyoming Intercollegiate

PALM DESERT, Calif. (Feb. 7, 2024) — The Wyoming Cowboys remain in the hunt to defend their Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate title after finishing the second day of action with a score of 282 (-6) on Wednesday during the second round of the event at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif

UW is six strokes back of Grand Canyon for first place, and held a lead late in the round.

“We had the lead on the 17th green with two holes left and we finished strong, but Grand Canyon finished stronger,” UW head coach Joe Jensen said. “I’m proud of the guys and we are in position to win the golf tournament. We have put ourselves in a great spot and we have to play with great confidence tomorrow, but I feel good with the effort from the guys this week.”

Jaren Calkins had another solid round for the Pokes with a 71 (-1) for a two-round score of 140 (-4). He sits in a tie for fifth place. Patrick Azevedo shot a 70 (-2) for a two-round score of 142 (-2). He is currently tied for 10th place.

Kristof Panke added another solid day with a 72. He has a two-round total of 144, and is in second place in a tie with Jimmy Dales, who finished the second round with a 74 (+3) and is an even part through two rounds. Davis Seybert shot the lowest round of the day for the Brown and Gold with a 69 (-3) and is one-over part for the tournament in a tie for 32nd place. It was his lowest round of the season.

Evan Johnson is playing as an individual, and finished with a 79 second round. He is nine-over part. Noah Wagner finished with an 81, and is 20 over part.

The field is led by Nicky Kling of Grand Canyon at 136 (-8) through two rounds after shooting a 5-under 67 in the second round. Tegan Andrews of CSU Fullerton and Coloton Cherry of Southern Utah are in a tie for second place along with round-one leader Gavin O’Neil of Grand Canyon. Galkins is in a troup tied for fifth.
