Cowboy Swimming And Diving Team Opens Eyes At Day 1 Of WAC Championship

PHARR, Texas (Feb. 28, 2024) –The Wyoming Cowboy swimming and diving team opened action at the 2024 Western Athletic Conference Championship on Wednesday with an effort full of heart and resilience inside the Pharr-PSJA-URGV Natatorium in Pharr, Texas on Wednesday. The Pokes recorded both a second and third place finish in the first two relay events of the championship.

 

“What a proud moment for our Cowboys,” UW assistant Coach Logan Arnold said. “We knew a lot of emotion was going to come out in the first race since the passing of our teammates and friends. It was great moment to come together and show One Wyoming.”

 

The Cowboys finished second in the 800-freestyle relay with a time of 3:24.69 with the team of Quinn Cynor, John Wargin, Quinn Teller and Matt Lang.

 

The Pokes opened the day with the 200-medley relay earning a third-place finish with a mark of 1:26.77 falling just short of the school record of 1:26.67 set last season. The team of Cynor, Caleb Ozenne, Adam Pannell and Reilly Gilbert cut nearly a half second off their seed time.

 

In diving, Bruno Grau finished 14th in the three-meter dive with a mark of 236.70 in the finals. DeShawn Campbell finished 16th with a mark of 192.15.

 

The Cowboys sit in fifth place after the first day of action with 70 points. UNLV leads the field with 124 followed by Cal Baptist with 117 and Grand Canyon with 98. Air force is in fourth with 70 points.

 

The Cowboys return to action Thursday morning at the WAC Swimming and Diving Championships.
